Famous Directors
Directors have one of the most thankless jobs in all of Hollywood (yes, even more thankless than the valet guy at the Chateau Marmont). They get to be in charge of millions of dollars of someone else's money, oversee the production design, set direction and acting performances enabled by said millions of dollars, and then take the fall if it doesn't turn out well. The upside is that if it does go well, there's usually an
Academy Award nomination waiting in the wings, and if they're really lucky, a shot at another film. From the golden ages of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood through modern day cinema, here are the directors who've managed to get it right (and usually more than once too).
Golden Age
The studio system of Golden Hollywood had strict rules about what you could and couldn't show on screen, as well as moral regulations on the types of stories you could tell. These directors figured out how to get around those guidelines and tell the stories that mattered to them.
New Hollywood
After the collapse of the old star-driven studio system, a new wave of directors took over. Fresh out of film school and working with fervent passion and artistic energy, these filmmakers turned out startlingly original and creative films that would catapult them to the heights of commercial and critical success.
Modern Legends
These filmmakers have captured the attention of a nation through bold storytelling, idiosyncratic visions and compelling performances. What happens next is up to them.
